Drawn to the Library!

“Public libraries are the heart and soul of any community. They are a place to read and think and browse and dream.”
– Mary McNear
People across the country visit their libraries every day! What’s the draw? Everything.
National Library Week recognizes the importance of libraries to our personal, academic, and professional lives. The theme for 2025 is “Drawn to the Library,” celebrating that we utilize the library in different ways and for various purposes: research, study, exploration, entertainment, connection, and growth.
Research, Study, Explore, Entertain, Connect, and Grow at TCPL!

Celebration Days of National Library Week
- Monday, April 7:
Right to Read Day is a National Day of Action supporting the right to read. The State of America’s Libraries Report, including the Top Ten Most Challenged Books, is released.
- Tuesday, April 8:
National Library Workers Day is a day for everyone to recognize the valuable contributions made by our library workers. Stop by the library and show your appreciation to the staff with a kind word or note.
- Wednesday, April 9:
National Library Outreach Day is a day to celebrate dedicated library professionals who meet their patrons where they are. Whether patrons need home delivery to their door, our youth getting information about career resources and programs at a career fair, or preschool students enjoying story time at school, TCPL Outreach is there.
- Thursday, April 10:
TCPL will celebrate National Encourage a Young Writer Day on April 10. We all gravitate towards storytelling. Children are especially drawn to imaginative tales and often make up their original stories. National Encourage a Young Writer Day fosters creativity and motivates young writers to put pen to paper (or fingers to a keyboard!) and write. The first 50 kids (grades K-12) will receive a writing packet to get them started on their writing adventure!
Take Action for Libraries Day is a day to rally advocates to urge members of Congress to invest in libraries.
- Friday, April 11:
Join us for our Library of Things Launch Party to celebrate our newest library addition! Staff will be on hand to answer questions, and patrons can check out our exciting items. Join us in the main library’s Great Hall from 10:00-12:00 or 3:00-5:00. Stop in for a cookie, check out our new Library of Things collection, and take one home to try.
- Saturday, April 12:
D.E.A.R. Day stands for “Drop Everything and Read” Day, a national month-long celebration of reading designed to remind folks of all ages to make reading a priority activity in their lives. You may remember Beverly Cleary writing about D.E.A.R. in Ramona Quimby, Age 8. On April 12, we celebrate in honor of Mrs. Cleary’s birthday. Stop in, grab a book, and read.
About National Library Week
National Library Week is an annual celebration highlighting the valuable role libraries, librarians, and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening communities.
Research in the mid-1950s showed that Americans spent less on books and more on radios, televisions, and musical instruments. Concerned that Americans were reading less, the ALA and the American Book Publishers formed a nonprofit citizens organization called the National Book Committee in 1954. The committee’s goals were ambitious. They ranged from “encouraging people to read in their increasing leisure time” to “improving incomes and health” and “developing strong and happy family life.”
In 1957, the committee developed a plan for National Library Week based on the idea that once people were motivated to read, they would support and use libraries. With the cooperation of the ALA and the Advertising Council, the first National Library Week was observed in 1958 with the theme “Wake Up and Read!” The 2025 celebration marks the 67th anniversary of the first event.
Read more about the history of National Library Week at American Libraries magazine, and check out the list of past National Library Week themes.
